Know Your Camera

Your camera equipment will take you on an amazing journey. Get to know the capabilities of your system. Read the manuals and practice using the various functions.

Take your manuals with you into the field. Study and experiment!

Use Manual Mode

If landscape photography is your bag, then manual should be your mode. Although it's a bit more difficult to understand than automatic mode, it's a very simple skill to acquire.

You will personally dial in the correct shutter speed and aperture setting for the particular exposure you are making.

Once you master this skill, you will be shooting in all lighting scenarios, and creating the photos you have always admired.

Your Main Investment Should Be In the Lens

Depending on your budget, try to buy the best lens you can afford. Your camera simply records what your lens sees.

The quality of the lens (glass) that you use can make a huge difference in your results. Good lenses are expensive but they are worth the investment if you take your photography serious.

Invest in a Good Tripod

It doesn't matter how much you spend on cameras and lenses. If your camera moves during exposure, the result is a blurry image.

A tripod is the best way to avoid camera shake. While tripods come in all shapes and sizes, you will usually get what you pay for.

If you have a big camera and lens, you need a big tripod. Don't cheap out on the "pod"!

Three Filters You Should Carry

A UV filter- This filter cuts the ever present haze in land and seascape photography. It also serves to protect the front element of your expensive lens.

A Polarizing filter- A polarizer helps reduce and cut glare on the surface of water and other shiny objects. It produces rich blue skies and it enhances existing clouds in outdoor shots.

A Neutral Density filter- This filter allows you to reduce the amount of light entering the lens. It gives you the ability to use slower shutter speeds to create wonderful effects!

Perform Self Evaluations

This is important. Are you happy with your results? If you are liking the way things are going, but feel there is room for improvement, congratulations! You're like the rest of us who are always looking for ways to improve our work.

Study your work, and figure out what's wrong, what's right, and ways to improve your results. Just keep on shooting, shooting, and shooting!

Be your on best critic. Evaluate your work and be honest with yourself. We are always more critical with ourselves and our own work than others are. If you are pleased with your work, others will be too.

We hope these digital slr photography tips help!
